Where is Taratarini Temple Located?
The Twin Goddesses: Tara and Tarini
Origin and Mythology
According to legend, Pandit Basu Praharaj, a learned Sanskrit scholar from the nearby village of Kumbhari, dreamt of receiving twin daughters as a divine boon. As a result, he conducted a grand Yagna, from which the goddesses Tara and Tarini manifested. Thereafter, raised as his daughters, they later instructed him in a dream to enshrine them on Purnagiri hill—thus establishing the sacred site we know today.
Moreover, the Chandi Purana by Adikavi Sarala Das also refers to the deities, further signifying their ancient presence in Odisha’s religious consciousness. Why is Taratarini Temple So Important?
Taratarini Temple is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Pithas, where it is believed that the breasts of Goddess Sati fell, making it a Stana Pitha (breast shrine). This adds immense significance in tantric and Shakti traditions. While human and animal sacrifices were once part of rituals here, the temple has since embraced more symbolic and non-violent forms of worship.
