Debrigarh was not what I expected when I first went there. I had seen the usual pictures and heard about the wildlife, but the place made more sense after I was actually inside it. The forest is large, the roads are rough in places, and the Hirakud side gives the whole trip a different setting.
I went mainly for the forest experience and the safari. What I ended up remembering was not one single animal sighting. It was the road, the greenery, the quiet, the room, the food and the feeling of being away from the usual routine.Table of Contents
Reaching the Debrigarh Area
The change starts before the safari itself. The approach to the stay area has a proper reception and a more organised tourism setup than I had imagined.
There was also a souvenir shop. T-shirts, caps, clothes, books and other Debrigarh-themed items were on display. One T-shirt had a price of ₹800 on the board I saw.
That part felt a little unexpected. I was going into a forest, but the visitor facilities already had the feel of a developed wildlife destination.The Forest Drive Was Half the Fun
Once we moved towards the forest, the surroundings changed quickly. The greenery became the main thing in front of us, with trees and open patches appearing along the route.
The road was not a smooth city road. Some sections were properly off-road, and the vehicle movement made the drive more interesting. I remember thinking that this was the kind of forest ride where the journey itself counts.
There were long stretches without anything dramatic happening. That was fine. A forest does not work like a tourist attraction where something has to appear every few minutes.
The quiet was noticeable. Bird calls broke it from time to time, but otherwise there was very little noise.
The Safari: Do Not Go With a Checklist
I had heard about leopard sightings at Debrigarh before the trip. On my visit, we did not get the kind of animal-filled safari that people sometimes expect from wildlife videos.
That did not ruin the ride for me. We still had the forest, the rough road and the changing views.
Peacocks were among the birds I noticed, and gaur sightings are one of the things Debrigarh is known for. Wildlife, though, is unpredictable. You can spend hours looking and still not see the animal you came hoping for.
That is worth knowing before booking a safari. If seeing a leopard is the only reason you are going, the trip can feel disappointing. If you enjoy the forest itself, there is much more to take from the ride.
Parbatitang and the Newer Facilities
The route also took us towards Parbatitang. There was a newer-looking visitor area with a café and washroom facilities.
After being on the forest road for a while, having a place like that to stop made a difference. It was a practical addition rather than something I would describe with a big tourism phrase.
The Room Was a Surprise
The stay was probably the part I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did.
Our room had a good view, and the open surroundings meant we could sit back instead of spending the whole time indoors. The room also had a stargazing feature that I found genuinely interesting.
Part of the upper section could be opened with a remote, so you could lie down and look at the sky from the room. At night, that was a much better experience than sitting inside watching television.
The network was not very reliable. Normally that would bother me. Here, it was almost useful. There was less temptation to keep checking the phone.
Food Was Simple, and That Worked
Lunch and dinner were served in a buffet setup, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food available.
The food was simple. I would not come here expecting a restaurant-style food experience, but after the forest drive, a straightforward meal was enough.
There were also extra orders during the stay. The overall atmosphere around the meals was relaxed rather than formal.
One thing I noticed was how quiet the place felt during the calmer parts of the day. That quiet became one of the better parts of the stay.
What I Liked Most in Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
For me, the biggest strength of Debrigarh is that the trip does not have to revolve around one activity.
You can spend time on the forest road, come back to the room, look around the reservoir-side landscape, eat, rest and then go out again.
The stargazing room was a highlight. The off-road safari was another. I also liked the simple fact that the place gave me a proper break from normal city noise.
What I Would Keep in Mind
I would not promise myself a leopard sighting before going. That is not how wildlife works.
Safari arrangements also need to be checked in advance. During my trip, the resort did not simply arrange the safari for us, so the safari timing had to be handled separately.
Mobile connectivity can be an issue. Anyone who needs constant network access should be prepared for that.
The forest roads can also be rough. Comfortable clothes and footwear make more sense than dressing as if you are going to a regular resort.
When I Would Go to Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
For me, winter makes the most sense. The weather is easier for spending time outdoors, and the forest is more comfortable for a long safari.
Summer can be much hotter, so I would keep outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day.
During the rainy months, I would check the current safari and road situation before making the trip. Forest conditions can change quickly after heavy rain.
A Simple Way to Plan a Debrigarh Trip
I would keep at least one night if the budget and schedule allow it. A same-day safari can show you the forest, but staying gives you the other side of Debrigarh.
Check the safari slot before travelling rather than assuming there will be a convenient one after you arrive.
Keep some time with no plan at all. That sounds unnecessary on a travel itinerary, but it was one of the things I enjoyed most.
If you are travelling with family, the combination of a safari, a quiet stay and the reservoir-side landscape can work better than trying to pack several unrelated attractions into the same day.
