Why This Temple Was Built
Odisha's best-known Ganesh temples were historically concentrated around Cuttack district and the town of Barpali, leaving western Odisha's Bargarh region without a comparable temple.
Recognizing this gap, Rajendra Sahu, then president of the local puja committee, resolved to build one. What began as a personal decision gradually became a community-wide effort involving devotees, craftsmen and local donors.
How the Temple Was Funded: One Rupee a Day
Rajendra Sahu proposed a simple savings model to his community: each member would set aside one rupee a day, with construction to begin after a year. The group agreed.
In September 2004, on Ganesh Puja day, the foundation ceremony (shubhadeba) was performed by the then Sambalpur MP, Prasanna Acharya, near the Bargarh railway station square.
This detail matters because the temple was not funded by a single benefactor. Its construction grew through sustained, small contributions from the community.
Construction: Craftsmen and Community Donations
The temple's stonework was carried out by craftsman Praphulla Behera of Nayagarh and his team.
Funding during construction reportedly came through donations from devotees. Some visitors who arrived planning to donate a single bag of cement ended up donating ten.
These contributions helped the project continue and eventually expand beyond the original construction plan.
The Sanctum and Stonework
For the sanctum's marble flooring, Rajendra Sahu approached Ghanashyam Agrawal. After initial hesitation, Agrawal funded marble and ornamental stonework for the 144-square-foot sanctum and the temple's entire arched entrance.
The work also included idols of the Navagraha (nine planetary deities), Dashavatara (ten avatars) and Panchadevata (five deities).
The Ashtadhatu Idol of Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple
Instead of accepting a ready-made idol offered by some devotees, the committee chose to cast the main idol in ashtadhatu.
Members of the Gudia community across western Odisha donated old metal utensils from their own homes to supply the material. The idea meant that many ordinary households became part of the making of the temple's main deity.
Surendra Sahu of Khaligram, Kantilo, cast the collected metal into a 14-quintal, approximately 1,400-kilogram, idol of Lord Siddhivinayak.
The story of the idol is therefore closely connected with the community that helped create it, rather than being associated with one individual donor.
