Talamali, Koraput: What Our Visit Was Like

Talamali, Koraput | localdrive
We were travelling towards Deomali during our Koraput trip when we came to the turn for Talamali. The road straight ahead continued towards the mountain; the other route took us to the viewpoint. We decided to make that detour before going on with our plan for Deomali.

Talamali is often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Odisha”. On our visit, the comparison made sense as a description of the scenery: green hills, one ridge behind another, and cattle grazing on the slopes with bells around their necks. It is a hill landscape in Koraput, not a replica of somewhere in Europe.

After the Rain, the Hills Looked Green

It had rained a few days before we arrived. By the time we reached Talamali, the sky had cleared and the afternoon sun was falling on the hills. We could make out the ridgelines across the valley, and the slopes looked green in the light. We had also noticed a small stream while driving through the Deomali side.

Visitors stop near the Talamali sign to look around and take photos. We walked a little farther uphill for a wider view. If you go, leave a little time to stand and look rather than treating the stop as a quick photo break.

We Left the Car Below the Rough Track

The surface became rough as we got closer to the viewpoint. There were loose stones underfoot, and some parts looked slippery. We did not try to take the car farther up. We left it at a lower point and continued on foot.

We saw scooters and bikes going farther along the track, but the surface was uneven. What works for one rider may not feel safe for another vehicle or driver. Check the ground before continuing, wear shoes with grip and take care on the way back down too.

Mobile Internet Was Not Reliable

Our phone lost its internet connection on the way, so we asked local people which way to go. That was more useful than trying to rely on live navigation without a signal.

Before leaving an area with working internet, save an offline map and check the route. If you reach a junction and are not sure which road leads to Talamali, ask someone nearby instead of guessing. The trip transcript does not confirm public transport timings, entry fees or official opening hours, so check those details locally if you need them.

Visiting Talamali on a Deomali Trip

We reached Koraput by train, hired a car for the local journey and stayed at a cottage-style resort in the hills. Talamali was our outing that evening. We had planned to visit Deomali the next day, so the viewpoint fitted into the trip as a separate stop on the way towards the mountain.

If you want to visit both, check the route before setting out and leave time for the walk at Talamali. I would not plan the day around an exact drive time based on this visit alone; road conditions and stops can change how long the journey takes.

A Few Things to Prepare

Save the map offline, wear shoes that can handle loose stones and carry drinking water. Keep enough daylight for the uphill walk and the return to the car. If the track looks too rough for your vehicle, do not drive farther just to get closer to the viewpoint.

People were taking photos and recording reels when we visited. If you film, stand clear of the track and watch where you step. Do not move onto an unstable edge for a better angle.

My Talamali Visit

During our group trip to Koraput, we took the Talamali diversion while heading towards Deomali; when our phone lost internet, we asked local people for directions, left the car below the rough section and walked over loose stones, then looked across the green hills and distant ridges, saw cattle with bells grazing on the slopes and enjoyed the clear afternoon after rain a few days earlier, before the light began to change towards sunset and we returned to continue our trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Talamali?

Talamali is a viewpoint in the Koraput highlands, reached from the Deomali side of Odisha's Eastern Ghats.

Why do people call it the Switzerland of Odisha?

The nickname refers to the green hills and wide views. During our visit, we also saw cattle with bells grazing on the slopes.

Can I drive all the way to the viewpoint?

We left our car below the rougher stretch and walked uphill. Loose stones and slippery patches can make the upper track difficult.

Will mobile internet work on the way?

It did not work reliably during our visit. Save an offline map before leaving an area with a stable connection.

Can Talamali be included in a Deomali trip?

Yes. We visited Talamali as an evening stop while travelling towards Deomali, which we planned to visit the next day.

Are entry fees and opening hours available?

The transcript does not confirm fees or opening hours. Check locally before travelling if you need that information.

Before You Go

For our visit, the details that affected the plan were the turn towards Talamali, the loss of mobile internet and the loose stones on the final stretch. Prepare for those three things first. The viewpoint is a stop to take at your own pace, with time to look across the hills before returning to the road towards Deomali.
